Notes of Inspiration

Today is my final day of classes for my master’s program at Harvard Extension School. I cannot believe how quickly time has flown! After this, all I have is finals and then graduation! Because I’m knee deep in final projects, this post will be short and sweet. Throughout my Harvard journey, I’ve taken hundreds of pages of notes. However, sometimes, someone says something that hits me so hard and/or there was I concept that I wanted to keep at the forefront of my mind and so I would make a post-it note of it and place it on my desk.

Some of these phrases were by teachers, some by guest speakers, some by TAs, and some from my peers. The concepts were ones that I wanted to influence my daily approaches. These notes have become my little notes of inspiration throughout this journey and I’m happy to share them with you. Below I have them written out more thoroughly:

  • “People are purpose maximizers, NOT profit maximizers.” – Bobbi Wegner

  • “You can’t change your mind with just your mind.” – Daniella Devarney

  • “Do I need to be helped, heard, or hugged?” – Laura Wilcox

  • “We are not influencing people to change against their will. We are influencing their will to change.” –Coach John Marshall

  • “Move a Muscle, change a thought.” –Silvia Christman

  • “What can I control, influence, or accept?” – Sydney Davis

  • “Loneliness is part of languishing.” –Corey Keyes

  • “Nothing about us without us!”—(referenced in Psychometrics when discussing adverse impact)

  • “Change is Loss” – Guest speaker from the Celtics (I forgot to write down his name!)

  • “Practice and hone, practice and hone, but never alone!” – Jill Slye

  • Outcome is the dependent variable (y) and the predictor is the independent variable (x) – thanks STATs

  • OARS+I – Open questions, Affirming, Reflecting, Summarizing, and Info Sharing (with permission)

  • Dan Pink’s Flow – Autonomy, Mastery, and Purpose

  • Dan Shapiro’s 5 core concerns of negotiation – Appreciate, Autonomy, Affiliation, Status, Role

  • “I can do BORING things!!” – Erika Coleman (because sometimes STATs and HR are just plain boring)

I started this journey in a dark place and cannot express how grateful I am for the life-changing experience this has been for me. I have been stretched and lifted for the last two years. I started as a skeptic and have been completely converted to the Harvard brand because of how incredible this experience has been. I hope to use what I’ve learned to help teach and lift others because that is what the best education does.

Thanks for reading with me today. I hope you find a little note of inspiration in your world this week as well.
